How to Organize Your Custom Closets for Colder Weather

Neil Rohrbacker • Oct 20, 2021

You can always feel the approach of fall, can’t you? The crisp chill, the scent of autumn leaves... the lack of warm sweaters in your custom closet. All of it is evidence that it’s time to organize your setup for colder weather. But how do you do that without pulling your hair out or spending money on expensive storage gear?

Not to worry! Getting cold weather-ready is easier than you think with these tips, tricks, and organizational hacks to get yourself (and the kids’ closets) ready for the coldest months of the year:

  • Purge warm weather clothing
  • Get ready for winter
  • Use vertical space and drawers

The challenge of seasonal closet changes is undoubtedly space. Your autumn and winter clothing is thicker and heavier, and there tends to be more of it because the weather demands that you dress in layers. Here’s how you can expertly arrange it all.

Purge Warm-Weather Clothing

It’s time. You’re not going to speed along the return of spring by clutching your flip-flops and gauzy bohemian tops until your knuckles turn white. Accept that you can’t wear these items in the winter. Get out the storage containers and purge your warm-weather wardrobe.

Anything that’s ripped, worn, or faded you should either toss or donate. Everything that you plan to keep, store in an extra closet or breathable containers so they will remain safe for the next six months until you can wear them again. A tip for you, storing any piece of clothing in plastic storage containers is just an invitation for mold to make itself at home!

Again, beware of moisture. Fabric colors can sometimes seep into one another if they get even a little damp. Try placing a layer of parchment paper in between each item to keep them dry. Switch out your spring shoe options, scarves, accessories, all of it. Replace all of your summery belongings with items that are more appropriate for the colder weather.

Get Ready for Winter

There’s a saying all over Jersey: “If you don’t like the weather, wait five minutes. It’ll change.” Anyone who has spent autumn in the northeast knows that it also usually only goes from cold to colder. You might experience a few winter days mixed in with your fall weather and vice versa.

PopSugar recommends setting up a fall and winter side within your closet so you have each available depending on the weather. Group your coats according to what’s waterproof and what isn’t. Then, simply arrange them by how heavy they are. You’ll quickly see what’s right for the elements that day and will be able to dress accordingly.

When getting your closet ready for winter, don’t forget about other essentials like thermal underwear, wool tights, and other items that you'll wear close to your skin for warmth.

Use Vertical Space and Drawers

Fall is a great time to begin using your vertical closet space. If you’re like most people in cold areas, you probably have more coats than you know what to do with. Your everyday coats are in the hall closet, but your specialty winter wear like ski jackets and formal coats are likely taking up room in your bedroom closet.

So where do you put your heavy sweaters? It's time to embrace the magic of folding! Fold ‘em, stack ‘em, and set ‘em up top.  If you have drawers, Martha Stewart explains how to neatly fold and stack them on end like woolen files. That way, you'll be able to see what's inside at a glance and fit more into each drawer.

Conclusion

Always think about space and necessities when organizing your closets. You don’t want them looking cluttered. You also want to be able to easily find whatever you need for the ever-changing cold weather. Taking your spring and summer clothes out of the closet, replacing them with your cold-weather items, and storing them all neatly will allow you to minimize the chaos while also keeping you warm and dry on cool, cold, freezing, or even snowy days.
