3 Ways to Cure The Small Closet Problem

Neil Rohrbacker • May 26, 2016
Do you have an older New Jersey home built back in the day where people only had 2 shirts and a pair of pants? Why else would someone build such a small closet? This is a common problem when you have one of those homes with ‘character’. I tell people, “closets are like televisions, I never heard someone say it’s too big”. We all have lots of stuff to store – from shoes to shirts and everything in between. Where are we expected to fit all this stuff in an older New Jersey home with smallish closets? First off, I would suggest reading our “Closet Cleanout Guide”, and if after implementing those ideas, you still don’t have enough space, then we need to start looking at other options.
The first option which people typically employ is to utilize the closet in another bedroom. This is great if you are young with no kids, or older empty nesters. OK, maybe if the kids are under 10 or so, you can still get away with it. But after that, the little ones start putting their little foot down (especially if they are girls).

A second idea is to get some clothing racks from Amazon and use them in the basement or some other space. These rolling racks are great and can store quite a bit of clothing. This option is best for off-season storage, like winter clothes in the summer, and vice versa. You can even purchase covers that completely encase your clothes from dust, dirt, etc.
The last option is to make a custom closet where none existed before. This is a great idea if you have a bedroom that is of a decent size. In this scenario, you build out a wardrobe or shoe tower within the master bedroom. The cost to build a wardrobe is not much different than hiring a contractor to build some walls, drywall, trim, and paint. It also gives a nice custom built-in look, which is desirable.

The options available today with respect to color and styles are sure to match most decors in the typical New Jersey homes, which were predominantly traditional in style. With the addition of moldings at the base and crown at the top, these wardrobes can look like they were always part of the home. The size can be just 18” wide for a shoe tower or take up an entire wall with enclosed shelving and hanging space. The only requirement is that it will take 24” of space from the wall.

So don’t despair! You do have options when it comes to storing and organizing all those beautiful clothes, shoes, and accessories. If all else fails, just donate all the clothes you don’t like to charity and when you have freed up enough space, tell your significant other, “look, I really do have nothing to wear!”
