Show Off Your Style With These Great Walk-In Closet Ideas

Neil Rohrbacker • Jul 19, 2016
Your home is a reflection of your style. You’ve carefully chosen the art for your walls, the materials used on your floors, and the type of furniture throughout your home, based on your own sense of what looks great. You let your personality shine through when decorating and designing our home. That’s part of the fun of home ownership!

Many times, decorating and interior design ends where the closed doors begin. No one is looking in your storage spaces, right? That’s not quite accurate, though! You’re certainly looking in your closets, after all. And you deserve a walk-in closet that is a joy to enter. When you see your belongings, each of which you’ve chosen for yourself, hanging in an unkempt or drab closet, it’s not an inspiring feeling. It’s time to think of ways to really spruce up this area of the home so you can feel joy and happiness when you open your closet door. Check out these ways to show off your style with these amazing walk-in closet ideas.

Luxurious Flooring

How many square feet is your walk-in closet? These can range pretty dramatically from 25 square feet to 200 or more, but most of the time a closet is under 100 square feet, oftentimes well under that. This means that you can probably afford to splurge on truly luxurious flooring for such a small space! Whether your tastes make you think of cool marble or a gorgeous Persian rug, think about what kind of texture you’d enjoy having underfoot, then consider ordering it for your custom walk-in closet.

Plush or Elegant Seating

Do you do the stand-on-one-foot dance when you put on your socks, pantyhose or shoes? Why are you purposely becoming literally unbalanced first thing in the morning? Take a minute to sit down and put on your hosiery or footwear in a relaxed fashion! And do so on a chair, bench or other piece of furniture that you choose especially for your walk-in closet. Chances are good that space is limited, so this does not have to be anything oversized. Consider buying a beautiful ottoman or refinishing an antique chair with new upholstery. Think about what height your new chair should be, then go to flea markets, antique shops or a high-end department store to find what you are looking for.

Show Off Your Shoes

Some people simply love their shoes. Are you one of them? Maybe you have an extensive collection of footwear that you rotate over the course of a month, a season, or even a whole year. Or perhaps you have a dozen good pairs of shoes that you don’t want to relegate to boxes or the floor when you’re not wearing them. Either way, talk to your custom closet company about designing a shoe rack that will put your shoes on display. This combines function and beauty, making it the perfect fit for a custom walk-in closet.

Use Color Carefully

Look around the living areas of your home, as well as your bedroom. What colors stand out to you the most? Are they your favorites? Using color in your closet is similar to using it throughout the rest of the house, but you need to take your wardrobe into consideration. Find a color scheme that complements not only your personal sense of style, but also the colors frequently found in your outfits. In many cases, these will be be similar, but sometimes someone who loves bright colors has a job that requires them to wear navy, black and brown nearly exclusively. So you might need to think about this a bit! Add color to the walls and the flooring, of course, but also consider different finishes for the closet shelves and other components and accessories.

Light It Up

Do you have just a dim overhead light fixture in your closet? That’s not enough for you to be able to see everything you have. In addition, having only an overhead light can be causing annoying shadows that limit visibility even more. Consider your options here. Wall sconces can make your closet glow with a gentle light. What about a chandelier, a hanging Tiffany-style lamp, or a halogen lamp (but replace the halogen bulbs with LEDs, which run at a much lower temperature)? Think about what type of lighting would benefit your usage of the closet, and choose from there.

Use Containers

While the typical closet has clothing rods for hanging, drawers for folding, and shelves or cubbies for stacking, you might have items that don’t really fit into these types of storage options. Take a trip to your local arts and crafts store and take a look at the many options for beautiful, whimsical or solid-colored storage boxes. These look nicer than plastic or cardboard shoeboxes and can be labeled with what’s inside. You can buy cube-shaped organizers to slide onto shelves or into cubbies, or use pretty baskets on an upper shelf. Choose something that goes along with your sense of style, whether it’s ultra-modern, minimalistic, romantic, traditional or retro.

The key to having a walk-in closet that is everything you want and more is to really think about what would make the space make you feel great about opening the doors each morning to gather your clothing and accessories. A variety of closet organizers is essential, but often, it’s those little details, like color, lighting, and displays that make the difference.
