5 Tips for Organizing Your Master Bedroom Closet in Englewood, NJ

Neil Rohrbacker • Nov 04, 2019
When you open your master bedroom closet, do you have the urge to simply slam the door closed? If you are struggling with closet organization in your Englewood, New Jersey, home, you are not alone. If you have a small closet in the master bedroom, you might have trouble finding room for all of your clothing in addition to your partner’s, if applicable. Even if you have a large walk-in closet, it’s easy for the space to get overrun with various items that are not stored properly. This can lead to frustration on literally a daily basis. At Closets to Adore, our professional closet organizers have five great tips for you to use to organize your master bedroom closet (and keep it that way).

#1 Purge What You Can

If you are dealing with an overstuffed closet, you probably already knew that going through your items and getting rid of what doesn’t make sense to keep would be our top tip. The fact is, if you have clothes and accessories that you aren’t using, then they are simply taking up room. This does not apply to items kept for sentimental reasons (such as a dress that your grandmother loved or the outfit that your newborn wore home from the hospital), but if you are saving every pair of jeans you’ve had since high school and you are over 25 years old, then something has to give.

Go through the items in your closet to decide what you will donate to someone else. It can help to have a firm friend assisting you during this task. If an item isn’t in good enough condition to pass along to someone else, contact your local thrift shops, because one or more of them might recycle old clothing that is unwearable. If you can eliminate even five or ten percent of your closet items by purging, that will open up a good chunk of storage that you can use for the items that you are using.
Closet Hanging Rod

#2 Forget About Hanging Everything

Sometimes, people think that everything they own other than undergarments and pajamas needs to be hung in the closet. Actually, there are some items that you shouldn’t hang or that you don’t need to hang.
  • Sweaters. Sweaters are almost always better off being folded and placed neatly in a drawer or on a shelf. It is easy for the shoulders to get pulled out of shape on a hanger, and hanging for a long period of time can cause the whole sweater to become elongated. Folding them eliminates this concern and opens up more space on your hanging rods.
  • T-shirts. Because they are made from a stretchy blend, t-shirts can also become misshapen easily. This is less of an issue if you are using nice, thick hangers and your t-shirts aren’t too heavy. Still, though, they are usually better off being folded. If you have a large collection of t-shirts that you have been hanging in the closet, you might be surprised by how much space you will gain.
  • Jeans. Jeans usually do fine hung in the closet, but they don’t need to be. If you’re short on space, simply fold and stack them. They don’t wrinkle easily and you’ll be able to wash, dry, fold, and wear without issues.

#3 Consider Staggering Your Hanging Rods

Do you and/or your spouse wear mostly separates as opposed to long dresses? If so, think about staggering your hanging rods. Hang one about three feet below the other to take full advantage of your wall and hanging space. You can put tops on the top row and bottoms on the bottom row, or you could hang yours on the top and your partner’s on the bottom. You can also make the bottom rod shorter if you do need to accommodate some longer items such as dresses, long coats, and pants hung by their waistbands.

If you choose not to stagger your hanging rods, consider taking advantage of the space under your regular rod. You can fill that area with shelving, install shoe racks, or find some other way to use the space. Having empty space in the closet when you are struggling with organization means that the closet is not using its full potential, so look for ways to fill that space in a way that is useful and functional.
Oddly Shaped Closet with Custom Storage System

#4 Make the Most of Odd Spaces

Not every closet in Englewood is going to be a perfect square or rectangle. You might have a dormer, making the ceiling sloped or the wall slanted. Or you might have a cubbyhole access door in your closet. Some closets even have windows inside of them. Your closet might be L-shaped or have a curved wall. These challenges might throw you for a loop, but there are ways to work around these obstacles.

Brian Holland of Impeccable Closets in North Carolina has recently written an article called, Creating a beautiful and functional custom closet. He discusses the whole custom closet design process and explains what accessory options are available.
